We warmly invite you to enjoy the richness of the Latin American & Caribbean region during the 2017 Latin American and Caribbean Studies Carnival Week! Celebrating Indigeneity, March 20-24, 2017. Our 11 events engage: Social Justice, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Dance, Martial Arts, Theater, Music, Environmental Studies, Indigenous Studies, Undergraduate Research & Performances.

Monday, March 20th: 8:00-3:00pm - RCC Ballroom: Tour a Giant Map of South America with Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan, Dr. Vernon Domingo, and their students; 12:20 - 1:35pm – DMF Auditorium: Keynote Conversation with Queen of the Maroons, Gaama Gloria "Mama G" Simms, and Dr. Diana Fox; 1:50-3:05pm - DMF Auditorium: "Indigeneity in the Caribbean Context: Before 1492" - A Talk by Dr. Erica Neeganawedgin, University of Western Ontario.

 Tuesday, March 21st: 9:30-10:45am - DMF Auditorium: BSU Trinidad Field School Research Presentation with Dr. Diana Fox and Students; 3:25-4:40pm – DMF Auditorium: BSU Student reading of Migdalia Cruz's play, A Crossover Dream, directed by Dr. Colleen Rua and followed by a social justice workshop. 

 Wednesday, March 22nd: 11:15-12:05pm – DMF Auditorium: BSU Trinidad Field School Launch with Founder, Akilah Jaramogi, Dr. Diana Fox, and Provost Karim Ismali; 12:20-1:35pm - RCC Demo Room: BSU Undergraduate Research Showcase with Presenters: Karoline Siljander, Sharisse Viltus, Holly Stanley, Eustace Walker, Monique Shepard, Amaryllis Lopez, Takeesha Joseph, and Shane Dougherty; 1:50-3:05pm - DMF Auditorium: A Performance by the Latin American Indigenous Band, MarKa.

 Thursday, March 23rd: 9:30-10:45am - Burnell 132 A & B: Capoiera Master Class, led by Cape Cod Capoiera; 11:00-12:15pm - DMF Auditorium: A Conversation with Dr. Lisa Paravisini-Gebert on the extinction of the Caribbean monk seal; 12:30-1:45pm –DMF Auditorium: Parrots of the Caribbean - A Talk by Dr. Lisa Paravisini-Gebert, Harvard University.

 To give you a taste of Latin American Caribbean culture, Sodexo is serving Caribbean national dishes every day in the Flynn dining hall (Tillinghast). Monday-Suriname/ Tuesday-Puerto Rico/ Wednesday-Bolivia/ Thursday-Brazil/ Friday-St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
