Dr. Calvin Mires will discuss his 17-year career in maritime
archaeology, and some of the programs that he is currently developing to offer
educational and training opportunities to citizen scientists of all ages in
Massachusetts. Shipwrecks are the largest and most recognizable remains, and
while many rest underwater, there are several that are found along the beaches
and shorelines in Massachusetts. The field is inherently interdisciplinary and
relies on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to investigate all
types of cultural resources, from shipwrecks to harbors, wharves, seaside
communities, maritime landscapes, and more.
