Event Details - Global Engagement Week - Global Conversations: COIL and Virtual Exchange in Asia, Europe, and Latin America

Join the Minnock Institute for Global Engagement from April 20-23 for Global Engagement Week. On Wednesday, April 21 from 10-11 a.m., the MIGE presents Global Conversations: COIL and Virtual Exchange in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

Three prominent administrators and scholars in Japan, Mexico and Spain who have developed innovative collaborative online international learning (COIL) networks in their universities will share strategies for incorporating virtual exchanges for comprehensive internationalization as well as practical examples for the implementation of COIL. The webinar will address current trends of international higher education in virtual collaborations and lessons for sustainability of COIL in the future.

The panelists are Brenda Garcia, MA, Director of International Projects at the Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico; Keiko Ikeda, Ph.D., Professor in the Division of International Affairs and Vice-Director of the Institute for Innovative Global Education at Kansai University in Japan; Alfonso Diaz Segura, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Internationalisation at University CEU Cardenal Herrera, Spain; and Wing-kai To, Ph.D., Assistant Provost for Global Engagement, BSU.

Brenda García’s main responsibilities as Director of Internationalization Projects are the development of the Intercultural Competencies Program at UDEM as well as Internationalization at Home activities. She also does research on international learning outcomes and assessment. She has been an active member of the Mexican Association for International Education, since 2001, currently serving as the Coordinator from the Northeast Chapter. She holds an MA in Education and a BA in International Studies, both from Universidad de Monterrey.

Keiko Ikeda has a Ph.D. from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, specializing in Japanese linguistics, foreign language education, and conversation analysis. Her interests in the international education field are internationalization at home, constructing active learning programs collaborating with universities overseas. Keiko also plays a vital role in another line of the on-going government-funded project, SUCCESS-Osaka Project (2017-2021).

Alfonso Díaz Segura is a teacher of architecture as well as Vice-Chancellor at University CEU Cardenal Herrera, where he has implemented the CEU Global Classroom to foster VE. He has a PhD in Architecture and an MBA with a focus in internationalization. Alfonso is also an associate member of the EAIE’s Expert Community Internationalisation at Home.

Wing-kai To holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of California at Davis. He is a member of the Professional Development and Engagement Committee in the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). He led BSU in the American Council on Education COIL initiative and recently presented for the Fulbright Finland Foundation and NAFSA on his leadership in implementing international virtual engagement programs.
