On Thursday September 19, join the Irish Studies
Program for Irish Cultural Heritage Day, Fall 2019, featuring a keynote lecture
by Dr. James Smith of Boston College:
A Book’s
Afterlife: Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries, Academic Advocacy, and Restorative
Justice.
Following,
the lecture, enjoy traditional Irish music played by Cathy Clasper-Torch, Kevin
Doyle, Sheila Falls Keohane, and Teddi Scobi; learn about the Irish Studies
minor and Study Abroad opportunities in Ireland; and partake in traditional Irish
afternoon tea.
James M. Smith is an Associate Professor in the English
Department and Irish Studies Program at Boston College. His book, Ireland’s
Magdalen Laundries and the Nation’s Architecture of Containment (U of
Notre Dame P, 2007), was awarded The Donald Murphy Prize for
Distinguished First Book by the American Conference for Irish Studies. Smith
serves on the Advisory Committee of Justice For Magdalenes Research (JFMR).
Irish Cultural Heritage Day is open
to the BSU community and the public. Faculty are welcome to bring their
classes.
